Angkor Thom travel pictures

The ancient city of Angkor Thom

The second most popular attraction in Angkor archaeological park is Angkor Thom. In contrast to many of the other sight around this is not a single temple but refers to a whole city. The most recognizable building is the Bayon temple. This religious sight has been decorated with many faces carved into stone. Many of these have different expressions and it would probably hard to find two which are identical. Besides the stone-carved faces of Bayon, the temple itself is a maze of alleys and towers which turn you into an explorer of an ancient sight (you will feel like Lara Croft or Indiana Jones). It is worth while to walk around the temple as the view from the back is stunning. It is noticeable that all the faces look different.

Other sights within the ancient city include the pyramid Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Terrace of the Leeper King and South Khleang. Some of the buildings are in a poor state, so not everything that looks interesting (or big) on the map lives up to it in reality. Still, this is a great place to explore and you can walk around in a large circle to see all the different structures. All buildings are fully accessible and you can easily spent a couple of hours here and look at some structures in more detail.

Some buildings and ruins are surrounded by forest which adds to that mythical feeling that surround the old temples. Because Angkor Thom is a big place and many people stop here only briefly, there are limited crowds which gives you plenty of time to take those perfect pictures.

Getting to Ankor Thom is best by rickshaw from the nearby city Siem Reap which is accessible by bus and by air. You will need only a few hours to see this place and hence it can be combined with visiting some other temples. The best time to visit is during the dry season which runs from October through May. However, the rest of the year still gets plenty of sunshine and rain mostly falls in the late afternoon or evening.
