Things to see in the desert town Uyuni
|
Uyuni is a small town in Bolivia. The only reason why the far majority of people visit Uyuni is because it is the starting point for a tour across the Salar de Uyuni and the colorful lakes. Most people will arrive early in the morning after a night on the bus. On arrival it is possible to book a tour across the salt plains or you are awaited by your tour operator if you have booked the tour in La Paz. When booking a tour here, just ask around with the different tour operators. Most of the charge the same price, but it can never hurt to compare prices. There is a fair chance that you are awaited by tour operators when you get off the bus.
After getting everything sorted out, most likely you will only have to spent a few hours in this town which is enough to see everything. There are a few sights such as the church, the market and an archaeological museum. Don't expect everything to be open as many things are closed early in the morning. There are a few monument worth seeing and the area around Ferroviaria street has an attractive look. Most likely there will be a restaurant and a shop open to buy some things. This is also the last place to stock up on drink and some food for the next few days.
Getting to Uyuni means for most people getting on a bus in La Paz. This ride is quite bumpy, so don't expect to get a full night sleep. Alternatively there are some flights and a train connection, but these can be somewhat irregular, so buy your tickets ahead. Uyuni is at a higher altitude so expect some cold weather at night. |
