|
Antwerp is located in the north of Belgium on the river Schelde and is the largest city in the Flemish part of the country.
Some of its famous historical sights include the Cathedral of our Lady, the Great market, City Hall, the Meat hall and the central station. Most of the city consists of old buildings so when walking between the main sights, you'll get a fair impression of Antwerp's rich history. The city used to be home to the painter Rubens and a museum is dedicated to him which several of his paintings. The statue of 'Lange Wapper' (Long John) in front of the 'Stone' building is dedicated to the legend of a man which legs were so long that he could move from one town to another in one single step.
Getting around Antwerp can be best done on foot as the city is fairly compact. It is also the best way to experience the city. Antwerp is also famous for its diamond trade and a part of the city is devoted to it and makes a nice area to go for a walk. The city is full of historical architecture giving it a pretty face. For some nice bars, go to the Great Market and taste a local beer. That is a treat well appreciated by the people from Belgium For some easy entertainment, consider visiting Antwerp Zoo. |
