Things to see in Vienna

Vienna is the capital of Austria with around 1.8 million people living in this city. It is one of the most attractive looking cities in Europe because large parts are pedestrianized and it has a well preserve historical center which has been largely built during the era of the Habsburg empire. Because of its historical importance, the city center has been designated UNESCO world heritage. If you have visited cities like PragueBudapest and Dresden, you will find many similarities in the architectural style, but in Vienna everything appears to be better decorated, renovated and maintained.

There are two places which make up the central part of Vienna. These are the Stephansplatz and the area near the Rathaus and Hofburg. The first place is where the St Stephen's cathedral is located and is the heart of the old city. The cathedral has some amazing mosaic tiles which decorate the roof and it is possible to to the elevator up and see it from close by and get a view over the surrounding area. The area around the cathedral is nice to walk around and there are many bars and restaurants located.

The other important part is the location where its former royal history can be experienced. The best known example of this is the Hofburg which is an impressive palace. The area is even more stunning due to the landscaped gardens and the statues that surround it which clearly highlights that the Habsburg kingdom went through a period of great wealth. Nearby are places such as the Rathaus (city hall) and the Staatsoper (state opera). These buildings have become icons of Vienna as well. Another sight that is not to be missed is the natural history museum. The central park with the surrounding buildings creates an incredible atmosphere.

A bit further away are the Belvedere palaces and Schloss Schonbrunn which are magnificent examples of former royal architecture and are great places to visit. For a day trip out of Vienna it is worth considering a visit to Eisenstadt or Bratislava which is an medieval city located in neighboring Slovakia.

The best time to visit Vienna and go sightseeing is from spring until the end of summer as the weather gets very comfortable. Getting around can be done by the metro which is perfect for longer distances, but the city lends itself very well to walking. You will probably need three days to do the city justice and see everything. If you only spent some short time traveling around in Europe, Vienna should definitely high on your list of cities to visit.
